Intervention Process
Initially the intervention process
begins with a phone call from a loved one who is concerned
about a drug addict or alcoholic in their life. Through
picking up the phone and asking for help, the loved
one has done a great service for the substance abuser
and has opened the door to the recovery process. During
the phone call, the loved one will learn what different
options are available depending on the condition and
willingness of the addict. If the addict is willing,
an intervention is not usually necessary and he/she
can go straight to treatment. However if the addict
is still denial of the problem, then the phone consultant
will inform the caller about the intervention process.
Alcohol Intervention Specialist
Most likely the loved one and the
consultant will arrange another phone call during which
those closest to the addict will speak with an alcohol
intervention specialist. The specialist will make arrangements
to come out to a specified location at which the addict
will be. The night before the intervention takes place,
the alcohol intervention specialist and loved ones will
meet and solidify the plans for the next day's intervention.
The intervention specialist will make sure that those
involved feel comfortable and will also help the family
set boundaries and consequences if the addict is still
not willing after the intervention. Before the intervention
takes place, the family and specialist discuss what
type of treatment will occur afterwards, and plans for
the program will be made in advance. After the drug
intervention is completed, the alcohol intervention
specialist will escort the individual to the chosen
drug rehab program.
